Motorbike Security Tips

Scrimping on your motorbike’s security is not worth the risk because you will end up paying the price in the long run. Motorbike theft brings up insurance rates and it causes inconvenience and heartache.

When considering the security of your motorbike, you should have all the facts. It is a fact that 80% of all stolen motorbikes are taken from the owner’s home and only 26% of all stolen motorbikes are recovered and the majority of these suffer major damage. Other facts are that motorbike theft rate is 2 times that of cars and professionals can steal a motorbike in as little as 15 seconds, even if it is locked.

Datatag

You should consider having a datatag to prevent motorbike theft. Datatag is an indelible code that is etched on the motorbike’s panels, meaning the thief cannot delete it. You can also install transponders in the wheels or the petrol tank. The signals these transponders produce can be picked up by police scanners.

Garage Alarm and Garage Lock

If you pack your motorbike in a garage, you should invest a motion sensitive garage alarm. You should check the location so that you do not block it. You should invest in a secure garage lock to complement the alarm.

Locks

You should invest in a brake lever lock. This lock clamps the front brake lever, making it impossible for the thief to ride the bike away. You should have this lock as a supplement to other security devices. You should invest in a disc lock and a U-lock. This lock is fixed to an immoveable object.

Kill Switch

You should install a well-hidden kill switch. This is particularly important if the motorbike is stolen at gunpoint because the thief will ride away for some miles without incident and then the bike will lock itself.

Avoid Routine

You should avoid the routine of packing your motorbike at the same place. This is dangerous because if a thief knows your every move, he/she can make observations on such things as your security system and it will so much easier for him/her to take the motorbike. Pick a secure parking lot that has many passersby, CCTV or paid security guards.

Other important safety tips are that you should join a neighborhood watch and you should not lock your helmet to the motorbike as this will make the theft more desirable. Always block the exit with a car or with equipment such as lawnmowers.
